XXVII Ina Bierstedt 14.02. – 01.03.03 Ina Bierstedt's paintings display scenarios of disorientation. At first sight, they appear to show still and deserted landscapes. At a closer inspection, however, their horizons fail to define a certain space wthin the picture and they even refuse to confirm the point of view the spectator had thought to assume. Opaque textures that suggest a reliable foreground suddenly open up and withdraw to the back, yet this back won't provide a lasting coordinate, either. Then on a different level we follow a constellation of sup-posedly abstract elements - only to find that they will turn into figurative depictions that indicate relations of size and of space we cannot deduce to their contexts. Ina Bierstedt is interested in the tension that is effected by such uncertainties and transformations. Her paintings may strike us with their serenity, as she works with numerous, yet thin layers of paint and as her colouring is rather cautious. But despite of their restrained materiality, these images develop a highly dynamic life of their own, Far from allowing romanticist receptions, Ina Bierstedt's paintings create fictional spaces whose ambiguities never seem to reveal all their secrets.
