WLADIMIR WINTER: 50 Erbauer Moskaus
(2004-2005; photography/video)
Wladimir Winter, an artist from Saratow who works with
painting and photography, has recently moved to Moscow.
There he was hired to portrait migrant construction
workers on the city's booming building sites. Most of
these "builders of Moscow" come from impoverished
former Soviet Republics; once in the capital, the men
are shut in the specific construction site, and they
will be illegalised immediately after their jobs are
done. Winter's photos served for special IDs that -
far from legalising the workers' status - only confirmed
their precarious condition.
In Winter's video-montage of these portraits, every
seven seconds a different builder's face appears. Of
the fifty construction workers in this series, 10 men
wear the same shirt.
JÖRN GERSTENBERG: mechanica
(2005; PVC-cuts)
Jörn Gerstenberg invents bizarre scenarios of an
uninhabitable, imaginary city. mechanica's labyrinthic
architechtures evoke a notion of beauty informed by
a modernist faith in perfection; in Gerstenberg's vertiginous
constructions, however, the spectacular and the perfectionistic
are immediately questioned by an omni-present, profound
melancholy.
